Soulard celebrates our unique French heritage with a return to Bastille Day, honoring the peasants who rejected the monarchy by “gathering the mob.”
The gathering will begin at 5:00 pm at the Grizzly Bear (1027 Geyer Ave). Come in peasant attire, with anti-monarchy signs and a “thirst” for vengeance.
We will parade our dastardly King and Queen through Soulard, stopping at Sweet Divine, Molly’s, Duke’s and Bastille (with drink specials for all involved), before ending at Pontiac Square Park for the royalty’s “beheading.”
Afterward, head back to Grizzly Bear for a “Feast and Fete” afterparty (featuring food from The Woodshack) and a “best peasant attire” costume contest.
Want to be Soulard Royalty next year?
Nominate a friend (or yourself) to be Soulard Royalty! One winner will be drawn at random (and can select a King / Queen partner of his or her choice). Royalty obligations include being crowned in front of friends and neighbors at the 2019 Vices and Virtues Mardi Gras Ball, as well as riding through Soulard in the 2019 Bastille Day parade to be “beheaded” in Pontiac Park.
Previous Soulard Royals are listed below (and are currently ineligible for re-nomination):
- Mark Woerz and Chris Beyer (2015)
- Alan Ziegler and LeRoy Fitzwater (2016)
- Brandon and Mandi Rogalski (2017)
- Leah and Eric Sutphen (2018)
The nominee must be a resident of Soulard. Each nomination is $5 (no limit) and due no later than midnight July 13, 2018. Nominations can be completed online at https://squareup.com/store/vices-and-virtues-ball/item/royalty-nomination or at most SRG general membership meetings. The 2019 Soulard Royalty will be announced live immediately following the 2018 Royalty “beheading” during this year’s Bastille Day Parade.
