Soulard Community Garden
The mission of the Soulard Community Garden (SCG) to improve the quality of life in the neighborhood by creating a visually engaging garden and to provide space for neighbors to grow their own food. The result creates an enjoyable showcase garden.
In 1992, the SCG began to improve the appearance of the weed and trash-filled vacant lot at 9th between Lami and Barton. At the urging of Alderman Phyllis Young, neighbors approached Gateway Gardening for assistance. After reviewing the garden plan, they provided lumber, soil (funded by CDA block grant funds), and advice. Formerly the site of a block of homes, demolished in 1974 and buried in the basements and leveled, the land was impenetrable by shovel and pick. Raised beds were built to permit planting.
Twenty-four household beds are assigned to qualified persons for planting whatever they like, to weed, water and harvest. Eight shared beds are tended by all and include strawberries, peppers, herbs, and more. The gardeners also share fruit from the apple and peach trees. Ornamental beds feature spring bulbs, perennial and annual flowers. The SCG installed water and irrigation, constructed an arbor, replaced the sidewalk, planted grass and other projects. The group has learned that success of the garden depends upon the work and commitment of all gardeners.
As you pass by, you may observe green thumbs digging away, children smelling flowers, neighbors stretching during a yoga class, or joggers resting on the benches. Each season beds are assigned. Each gardener pays an annual fee to cover the water bill. To find out about openings, call 314-865-1980. Or get involved by attending the annual fall harvest Party Fundraiser where proceeds from the event support garden expenses.
