THE RESTORATIONIST

1976-1979

In 1976, the city celebrated the United States Bicentennial with various festivities and historical commemorations. The following year, in 1977, St. Louis hosted Pope Paul VI during his pastoral visit, marking a significant event for the city's large Catholic community. In 1978, the Gateway Arch, the symbol of St. Louis, was designated as a National Historic Landmark, further solidifying its status as an iconic American monument. During this period, St. Louis continued to face urban challenges, including efforts toward revitalization and dealing with the economic impacts of declining manufacturing jobs.
